Another federal grant to fund BRAVE expansion

BATON ROUGE (WBRZ) - The city's crime-fighting program, known as BRAVE, will receive an additional $1.4 million from the federal government to expand its anti-violence initiatives into the 70802 area.

The news comes just two days after city leaders announced BRAVE would be awarded a $1 million dollar grant geared toward neighborhood revitalization and crime.

Mayor Kip Holden says, "being able to put an additional $2.4 million toward our current efforts will definitely make Baton Rouge safer."

Holden helped secure the money after meeting with officials with the Department of Justice to explain the program's success in targeting high-crime neighborhoods in the 70805 area and giving juvenile offenders the opportunity to get their lives on track.

Officials say BRAVE's efforts helped to reduce the city's homicide rate by 35 percent from last year.
