Appeal denied in lawsuit over nine-member school board

Appeal denied in lawsuit over nine-member school board

BATON ROUGE - A state appeals court refused to hear an appeal involving a lawsuit over the East Baton Rouge Parish School Board's recent decision to eliminate two positions on the governing body.

The NAACP and others sued, claiming the redrawn districts could illegally dilute black representation on the board.

Last week, a district judge ruled against the lawsuit's filers. They wanted an injunction blocking the change.

The school board voted on July 24 to reduce the number of seats from 11 to 9. Supporters of the measure said reducing the number of members could help reduce friction at meetings that was holding up progress on several issues.

The NAACP said Thursday it plans to appeal to the Louisiana Supreme Court.

The appellate court gave no reason for why it denied the appeal.
