Bus driver accused of choking student

BATON ROUGE (WBRZ) - Authorities arrested an East Baton Rouge bus driver this week after they said she grabbed a 7-year-old by the throat and pinned him into his seat on the bus.

Sheriff's deputies arrested Sandra Henderson, 58, Tuesday on suspicion of cruelty to a juvenile.

According to a department spokesperson, on Nov. 6 deputies were told by the 7-year-old victim and other students who were on the bus that Henderson choked him and forced him into his seat because she thought the victim and his brother were fighting.

Investigators said surveillance video on the bus showed Henderson dealt with a disturbance in the back of the bus, then grabbed the victim by his arm as she made her way to the front of the bus. The video showed the boy twist away from her, at which point deputies said Henderson grabbed him around the neck and shoulders and forced him into his seat. They said the video also showed Henderson apparently trying to pin the boy down using her body.

Deputies said Henderson told them she saw the boy over his crying brother, and grabbed him to stop them from fighting. She claimed when she grabbed the boy's arm he took a swing at her. Deputies said she told them she folded his arms across his chest, and when he kept kicking at her she used her knees to pin him down.

Deputies arrested Henderson after the questioning and booked her into the parish jail on cruelty charges.
