BATON ROUGE - Metro Council members voted down a controversial fairness ordinance 8-4 Wednesday night after multiple meetings with impassioned pleas from both sides of the debate.
The ordinance would have banned discrimination against gay, lesbian, and transgender people.
Security had been increased at City Hall since Council member C. Denise Marcelle, who authored the ordinance, said she has received threats for her support.
A number of protesters opposed to the ordinance gathered outside the Metro Council chambers ahead of the vote. Numerous business organizations and companies located in Baton Rouge voiced support for the ordinance at prior meetings.
