PLAQUEMINE - Dow Chemical announced plans today to build two new chemical plants in Louisiana and upgrade their current facility in Plaquemine.
The $1.06 billion plans include two new plants, one in Iberville Parish and the other in West Baton Rouge Parish, to produce next-generation synthetic rubber and high-performance polyethylene. The company said upgrades to the Plaquemine facility will improve its ethylene capacity.
Dow said the project will keep 1,380 existing workers and create 71 new direct jobs. They also estimated the work would create 470 new indirect jobs, as well as 1,200 construction jobs and 150 contractor jobs to support the new facilities.
Dow said they will start work on the Plaquemine ehtylene upgrades almost immediately, and expect to start work on the other two facilities by the end of 2013. They estimated work on the two plants will be done by 2016.
