Longest-serving death row inmate released

Longest-serving death row inmate released

ANGOLA- A man tasted freedom for the first time in three decades Tuesday evening, and he said his mind raced the second he stepped foot outside the walls of the State Penitentiary.

Glenn Ford was released after a judge overturned his murder conviction and ordered him to leave Angola. Ford had been on death row for nearly thirty years until he walked away just before sunset.

"My mind is going in all kinds of directions, but it feels good," Ford said.

Ford was serving time for the murder of a Shreveport jeweler and had maintained his innocence. Prosecutors finally believed him when new information showed he was not involved in the murder.

"I can't go back and do anything that I should have been doing when I was like 35, 38, or 40," he said.

"My son was a baby when I left, and now he's a grown man with babies," Ford added as he enjoyed the last few moments of the sun, shackle-less and not having to worry about prison guards.

Ford was one of the longest-serving death row prisoners in Louisiana.
