LSP: Man arrested after BB gun brought to Capitol

BATON ROUGE (WBRZ) - Authorities arrested a man today who State Police said brought a BB gun which looked like a rifle to the State Capitol Building.

Sgt. J. B. Slaton with LSP charged Russell W. Vaughn, 32, of Greenwell Springs with resisting arrest after he was arrested by the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office on unrelated charges.

Slaton said around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday Vaughn went up the Capitol steps with what looked like a rifle in his hands. Senate security stopped him outside the building's doors and told him to drop the gun, which he did before fleeing the grounds in a black car. Security said the gun turned out be a BB or pellet rifle.

After Vaughn's arrest Thursday morning Slaton said LSP received a tip he was the one who brought the gun to the Capitol. They also confirmed he had a car which matched the one which fled the scene Wednesday.

LSP investigators said during an interview with them Vaughn made several incriminating statements about the incident. They chose to charge him with resisting arrest after conferring with the District Attorney's Office.

Slaton said State Police were continuing to review security around the Capitol after the incident.
