Metro Council approves Costco Wholesale plans

BATON ROUGE (WBRZ) - Mega-store Costco Wholesale could open in Baton Rouge a year from now, after the East Baton Rouge Metro Council approved an economic development plan to pay for infrastructure and road improvements in the area.

The retailer is investing $38 million into its 144,000-square-foot warehouse at the old Coca-Cola bottling plant on Airline Hwy and Dawnadele St.

The city will commit $7 million to Costco for infrastructure improvements. Costco will front the money, and the city-parish will pay them back through a two percent sales tax spent on Costco goods.

"Not only will this improve the traffic that wants to go to Costco, it will also improve the traffic for anybody using that intersection in the future," said East Baton Rouge Chief Administrative Officer William Daniel.

Road improvements will include the realignment of Dawnadele St. and additional turning lanes.

The project should be paid off in less than four years, at an interest rate of 4.5 percent.

Costco is expected to be open by next April.
