Nearly 800 sign to fight Istrouma closure

BATON ROUGE- Alumni of Istrouma High school are fighting to keep the school open, after it was announced Tuesday, the school would be closed at the end of the school year.

Nearly 800 people have signed a petition to try and save the school, which has registered failing grades on state performance tests for years. Despite the failure, people want to keep the school open and work to make it better.

"These are children we are talking about and they are moving them around like pawns," said Metro Councilwoman Denise Marcelle.

"I'm not real happy with it," she added.

"It's unfair to the children; unjust to the community," Faith Ashton, an alumni said.

Glen Oaks Middle School will also close. Both schools are part of the Recovery School District, which took control of the schools from East Baton Rouge Parish Schools because of poor performance.
