New Orleans mayor seeks help after Bourbon mayhem

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu is calling for state and federal law enforcement help following a Bourbon Street gunfight that injured 10 people - most of them out-of-state visitors.

Landrieu said Tuesday he's asked Gov. Bobby Jindal to assign 100 state police to the city permanently, and he reiterated calls for federal help - including manpower and money to hire more police.

But Landrieu also said the problem goes beyond policing. He said a "culture of violence" is a national problem. He noted multiple shootings over the weekend in other major cities.

Police say the victims in Sunday morning's Bourbon Street violence include a woman from Australia, two visitors from Alabama and one each from Arkansas, Mississippi and Florida.

A woman from Hammond in south Louisiana remains in critical condition.
