Port Allen looking to pass new laws

PORT ALLEN - Port Allen council members plan to discuss two new ordinances that would add transparency with the future mayor of the city.

This comes after former mayor Dee Dee Slaughter was recalled in November.

Council members say they want clearer laws when it comes to city checks and hiring of new employees. One of the ordinances would require city checks to have two signatures instead of one.

Temporary Mayor Lynn Robertson says that would offer more transparency and control over taxpayer money.

"In the past year there has been one signature and that has been the mayor and the council would like to see that we have two signatures, an administrative person and an elected official," she said.

The council also wants to rework an ordinance for the city's hiring process to make it more fair. The council plans to introduce the ordinances in writing at next week's council meeting and vote on the ordinances in March.
