Red light camera extension approved

BATON ROUGE - Meto Council members voted to continue the red light camera program in East Baton Rouge Parish, with some modifications.

The council approved a measure Wednesday to re-negotiate a 5-year extension to the existing program.

The measure also included a request from Mayor Kip Holden's office that the negotiations include requesting local law firms issue ticket notifications. Currently, a nationwide law firm handles those notifications.

The current contract with American Traffic Solutions ends Jan. 1, 2014.

A study done by the Department of Public Works Traffic Engineering Division says that side-impact crashes, or "T-bone" crashes, decreased by 40 percent at photo-enforced intersections. The same study found rear-end crashes increased by 4 percent.
