Revised Medicaid expansion proposed to House panel

Revised Medicaid expansion proposed to House panel

BATON ROUGE (WBRZ) - Two Republicans joined with Democrats on the House health committee to advance a proposal to tap into federal funding available to offer insurance to the working poor.

But one of those Republicans says his vote was a mistake.

The House Health and Welfare Committee already rejected a bill that would have expanded Louisiana's Medicaid program under the federal Affordable Care Act.

But on Wednesday, the committee voted 10-9 for a modified proposal that would use the federal Medicaid expansion dollars to pay for private coverage for the uninsured.

Republican Rep. Rogers Pope, of Denham Springs, was one of two GOP members to switch position - and Pope says he didn't realize he was voting to support the bill.

Pope's vote got the bill out of committee, heading to the House.
